We are open every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Years Day. We open at 8:30AM and close at sunset. Exact closing time varies depending on guest attendance. If you are coming later in the afternoon (after 4pm) we suggest you call our sluiceway to check estimated closing time. 828-632-3394

We are an active mine. Permits are required for entry. Permits are valid the entire day of purchase and include unlimited access to our sluiceway (enriched buckets not included), creek and dig site. Tools are included.

We are an active mine, so everyone in mining areas must be on a corresponding permit (participating or not). Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a paying adult with an equal permit. No exceptions. If you do not wish to participate, there are shaded picnic tables where you can relax.

How long you stay depends on the activites you plan to do. If you plan to dig and chase mineral veins, we suggest you arrive early and plan on staying all day.

We will sound an air horn, evacuate the property and close temporarily during electrical storms. During a storm, everyone in the property should be in the lapidary or in their vehicles. We watch the radar closely and reopen when it has passed. We do NOT issue refunds due to storms, please keep this in mine when planning your visit. Your permit is good for the entire day, so you may leave and return when the storm passes if you wish. We do not close for rain.

Yes! We love animals at Emerald Hollow Mine. Your furry friend is welcome to tag along as long as he/she is on a leash and friendly.

We do have handicapped parking close to the sluiceway. We do not have ramps. We would not suggest creeking or digging to those with limited mobility due to the rough terrain.

We do have enriched buckets available for purchase at our sluiceway. These buckets are enriched with authentic gemstones from all over the world. They are filled with native Emerald Hollow Mine soil and native minerals may be found in them as well. We do have an area of the creek reserved for educational programs. We do salt that portion of the creek on the day of the educational programs, so sometimes what they miss may make its way to the public side of the creek. Our staff can identify native minerals. We do not salt the dig site.
