December's Trifecta of Dazzling Birthstones

Birthstones originated around 1912 and since then have been altered and changed with the times.

Although this time of year is strongly associated with holiday hues of red, green, silver and gold, those with December birthdays have far more color options when it comes to December birthstone jewelry: the light, bright blue of turquoise, the dazzling indigo blue or Tanzanite, and the many shades of zircon.

Turquoise was known as the "Love Charm" in the early das, and some still regard it as such. In the late 1800's/very early 1900's,many wore the stone in rings in order to ward away evil spirits. Turquoise was a Victorian favorite in the realm of birthstones and other jewelry favorites of the Era (like Carnelian and Amber).Ranging in color from bright robin’s egg to pastel blue to light bluish green, turquoise is one of the oldest known gemstones. Even the Egyptians decorated King Tut's tomb with the stone! The Aztecs and The Persian Empire even used this stone often for decoration ,and as well as for it's healing of those who have fallen ill to poision or fallen off horseback!Although the gem is ancient the name is relatively new: dating from thirteenth century France, the word “turquoise” meaning “stone from Turkey”, came from when the gems were brought from Turkey to Western Europe.

Other healing properties include :

  • aid in digestion and absorption of nutrients\

  • to help neutralize the body's acidity

  • to help soothe sore throats and purify the lungs.

Turquoise is fragile,so take extra caution when handling or wearing Turquoise!

The Zircon, second December Birthstone, is considered the symbol of purity, chastity, integrity and dignity.

It is a fantastic stone of aiding in insomnia or any sleep disorders. It is also said that It can bring honor and wisdom to those who wear it as well. Zircon even occurs in North Carolina! Also,Zircon and Cubic Zirconia are not the same thing!

Zircon is the closest gemstone that resembles a diamond and comes in a handful of different varieties such as:

  • Jacinth - Yellow, orange, brown, or red variety of Zircon

  • Jargon - pale and colorless variety

  • Starlite: The blue variety, that is rarely natural and usually needs to be heat treated

  • Matura Diamond - Trade name for colorless Zircon

The last of the December birthstone is the rare and spectacular Tanzanite. Many believe that the Tanzanite forces the wearer to tell the truth, redeeming his honor and integrity
