There is a new stone making its way into our enriched buckets! Mahogany Obsidian will be available at Emerald Hollow Mine very soon. We're excited to share some background on this 'new' material with you.
Mahogany Obsidian is unique to North America. It is often found along an iron belt that stretches from The Rocky Mountains to Central Mexico. In the USA, it is illegal to collect more than fifty pounds of Mahogany Obsidian at a time. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) made this law in an attempt to preserve the natural wonder. In the past, Mahogany Obsidian has proven useful to ancient and native peoples for a variety of uses.
Obsidian is a natural glass formed from cooling magma, making it an igneous stone. The magma cools so quickly, the needed time for individual crystals to form isn't allowed. Thus creating an amorphous glass lacking a repeating crystal structure. It often occurs in North America and parts of the western United States. Mahogany Obsidian has iron included within that creates mahogany colored stripes and swirls. Mahogany Obsidian breaks with a characteristic "conchoidal" fracture. A conchoidal fracture is a smooth and curved type of fracture.
Although Mahogany Obsidian has a hardness of 5-5.5 out to 10 on MOHS hardness scale, you still have to be careful! Where the conchoidal fractures intersect often rivals the sharpness of a razor blade. Obsidian makes great tools
and weapons because of these properties. This created many advantages for those who lived during the Stone Age.
Native Americans first discovered Mahogany Obsidian in the Western United States. They utilized mahogany obsidian for crafting arrowheads, spears, and blades. Every individual piece has unique characteristics that set it apart from the rest, a result of exactly where it had formed. It has been found that these artifacts had been transported across vast distances of ancient trade routes.
Mahogany Obsidian has proven its usefulness and visual appeal for centuries. This special variety of obsidian makes a striking addition to any rock collection! It cabochons beautifully and it's conchoidal cleavage makes for excellent arrowhead knapping material. Mahogany Obsidian has made its way into our enriched buckets! We are open seven days a week, from 8:30 am until sunset. Come visit Emerald Hollow Mine to meet this very special addition to the lineup! We'll be here.
